Jobs In Skateboarding - Independent Magazine Owner.

Looking from the outside in it may seem as if jobs in skateboarding are few and far between, but once you delve deeper into the possibilities there's a plethora of careers surrounding our favourite toy. We hit up as many people as possible to investigate deeper to ask ‘What do you even do?’, so hopefully you’ll learn something new and find helpful ways to get into our so-called skateboarding industry.

Graham has been running North Skateboard Magazine from his house since day one. It's interesting to have someone talk about what it is a full-time job whilst also doing their other full-time job.

What's your name?

Graham Tait.

What is your current role and who do you work for?

I'm the owner of North Skateboard Magazine.

What is it that you actually do? /  What takes up a majority of your work time?

I do everything. I shoot as many photos as I can, do the layout and design, curate all the content for the interviews, features, and photographers. I deal with all the advertising and behind the scenes paperwork stuff.

Did you have any roles in the skate industry before this?

I've worked in Focus Skate Store for over 15 years. This definitely helped with contacts when first starting the mag.

What’s the best thing about your job?

Not having to answer to anyone. Haha! Being creative and making physical products is very satisfying. Whether it's the magazine or soft goods, I always get a buzz from making stuff.

What’s the worst thing about your job?

Working on your own is great, but that means you have to be very motivated. If I don't get the work done then it doesn't get done.

Any advice for skateboarders out there who want to pursue your line of work?

Be prepared to work a lot.
