Vans Wraps Up Half Cab 30th Anniversary Celebration
By Highlighting Heritage and Innovation With the

 Skate Half Cab ‘92 GTX

The icon that defined a generation meets skateable Gore-Tex construction.

Costa Mesa, CALIF. (Nov. 16, 2022) – Vans Skateboarding proudly celebrates 30 years of the Half Cab™ with the Skate Half Cab™ ‘92 GTX—a nod to the future of the silhouette. This past year, Vans paid tribute to the Half Cab in honour of the iconic shoe’s three-decade history, and the Skate Half Cab ’92 GTX is the culmination of this effort, representing the next generation of the shoe and skateboarding.

Born out of necessity in 1992, skaters created the original Half Cab™ by cutting down high tops into customised skate shoes. With nothing but scissors and duct tape, they unknowingly constructed the world's greatest skate shoe. The Half Cab was born from this creative spirit, and three decades later, it’s this creative spirit that continues to drive skateboarding forward. Vans continues this legacy with the Skate Half Cab™ ’92 GTX, a winterized classic that builds on the innovative nature of Vans Skateboarding’s DNA.

A modern take on one of the most influential skate shoes of all time, the Skate Half Cab™ ’92 GTX draws on elevated materials and a skateable Gore-Tex construction. Featuring fully revised uppers with molded heel counters, locked-in tongue straps, and a recut of the DURACAP underlays, the shoe offers a customised fit that prioritizes breathability and durability where skaters need it most. The two-part foxing, featuring a tougher toe knurl, ensures heightened board contact, and the redesigned gum rubber sole has been reinforced with a SickStick rubber compound and an internal heel shank to deliver additional grip, board feel, support, and durability.

The sidewall finish, combined with graphic elements like Vans' signature Checkerboard flag and Skateboarding graphic treatment, add undeniable authenticity and subtle differences that enhance this iconic style.
In 1989, Vans and skateboarding legend Steve Caballero introduced the first Globally available signature skate shoe, the Caballero. Over the next few years, in true DIY spirit, skateboarders saw a chance to reimagine the silhouette by cutting down the high-top padding to better meet their needs, pushing the boundaries of progression and creative expression. The Half Cab™ was born. This year, Vans celebrates skateboarding’s creative spirit and three decades of an icon that’s influenced culture both within skateboarding and beyond, with Half Cab™ product drops and many exciting collaborations throughout the year, as well as a three-part content series highlighting stories of the silhouette’s past, present and future.
The Skate Half Cab ‘92 GTX will be available on Nov. 23, 2022, here.
