Jobs In Skateboarding - Action Sports Marketing
Jobs In Skateboarding - Action Sports Marketing.
Looking from the outside in it may seem as if jobs in skateboarding are few and far between, but once you delve deeper into the possibilities there's a plethora of careers surrounding our favourite toy. We hit up as many people as possible to investigate deeper and to ask ‘What do you even do?’.
Amanda is a prime example that being a sponsored skateboarder in the UK also requires you to balance out a full-time job. Whilst riding for Blast Skates and Vans, Amanda also handles all things action sports marketing at Vans.
What's your name?
What is your current role and who do you work for?
I lead Marketing for Vans in the UK specialising in action sports.
What is it that you actually do?
I look after Skate, Surf, Snow & BMX in the UK. In a nutshell I plan the marketing campaigns for key product stories and brand initiatives, work with the accounts and media, organise events, do a bit of creativity, plan the budget for the year, deal with sponsorships…
Did you have any roles in the skate industry before this?
No.
What’s the best thing about your job?
Being able to support and work with inspiring people and communities.
What’s the worst thing about your job?
Skateboarders asking for shoes at 2a.m on Instagram.
Any advice for skateboarders out there who want to pursue your line of work?
Just go for it and find what you like! I studied Marketing and Design at university and it’s definitely helped me where I am now. Get a good CV, cover letter and good recommendations. But sometimes it’s not even about all that professional side, your personal experiences and industry knowledge are very valuable and that’s when you need to make the most out of them and prove it.
