Jobs In Skateboarding - Core Skate Account Manager

Jobs In Skateboarding - Core Skate Account Manager.

Looking from the outside in it may seem as if jobs in skateboarding are few and far between, but once you delve deeper into the possibilities there's a plethora of careers surrounding our favourite toy. We hit up as many people as possible to investigate deeper and to ask ‘What do you even do?’.

Shiner Distribution hold and ship some of the biggest brands in skateboarding to your favourite skate stores across the UK and Europe, including Krooked, Bones, Independent, Anti Hero, Spitfire and Thrasher.

What's your name?

Nic Chappell.

What is your current role and who do you work for?

Core Skate Account Manager – Shiner Dist

What is it that you actually do?

Provide UK Skate shops with the brands that we carry, help with events, jams, competitions and everything else in between.

Did you have any roles in the skate industry before this?

Only warehouse work prior to my current role.

What’s the best thing about your job?

Being involved with Skateboarding in general, there’s a lot of awesome people involved all over and I get to be a part of events/trips that I would otherwise be unable to attend.

What’s the worst thing about your job?

Sometimes when things get stressful it can make the hobby that you’ve grown up with and loved so much become less of an escape from the world – but no matter how tough it can occasionally get at times, the good far outweighs the bad!

Any advice for skateboarders out there who want to pursue your line of work?

Find out where your local distro is! I was very lucky growing up in South Wales as there is a good part of the industry in Bristol which is just over the bridge from me. Also, don’t be afraid to get your hands dirty – I worked in the warehouse for years before I managed to talk my way into sales but I wouldn’t have it any other way as I now get to see how the business works from the ground up. Shout out to the Shiner warehouse crew! That’s the guys making sure you have product in your local shop and it gets gnarly in there during the winter!

Lastly, have fun and be nice – we all love skating and we are all still big kids. I love everyone I get to work with and I’m very thankful indeed to be doing what I’m doing!
