International Women’s Day - Ruby Mcmullen

To mark International Women's Day we asked a few friends of Welcome to talk about some of the marginalised gender skateboarders that they've found to be inspirational in this wide world of skateboarding. This is what Ruby had to say:

Elissa Steamer - Thrasher Magazine Cover March 2024

Elissa Steamer (@Elissa_Steamer)
Elissa Steamer, for me and many girls across the world has always been a huge inspiration, reshaping perceptions and inspiring countless women to embrace the sport. Throughout her career, Elissa's influence transcended video parts and skating generally, leaving an enduring mark on culture and enabling female skaters to leave their own in the community.

Elissa burst onto the scene in the 90s, a time when skateboarding was largely seen as a boys' club. She fearlessly carved her path through the streets of San Francisco, earning respect with her undeniable talent and dedication. Elissa's refusal to conform to traditional gender norms also laid the groundwork for a shift in attitudes towards women in skateboarding. This especially sticks out to me as a key point correspondence between myself and Elissa; her attitude has shaped my own in this respect and has validated my own personal way of presenting myself.

One of Elissa Steamer's most significant achievements was becoming the first woman to receive a pro model. This milestone not only recognized her skills but also signalled a changing tide within the sport. Elissa's pro model served as a symbol of inclusion and representation for female skaters, inspiring them to pursue their passion with confidence.

Beyond her accomplishments, Elissa's impact can be felt on a personal level within the skateboarding community. Her presence helped create a more welcoming environment for women in a sport historically dominated by men. By challenging gender stereotypes and showcasing her talent, Elissa became a role model for myself and millions of female skaters around the world, proving that gender is no barrier to success.

Elissa Steamer's influence extends beyond skateboarding; she has become a symbol of empowerment and authenticity. Through her journey, she has demonstrated the importance of perseverance and staying true to yourself. Her legacy continues to inspire women in skateboarding, reminding me of the power of breaking barriers and paving the way for future generations.
